What is this orange sludge on my tree?

I have a large tree in my front yard that has an open area that has a slimy orange sludge covering it. Does anyone know what this is and how it is treated?

Sounds like you might have a slime mold, a very fascinating group of organisms. Fuligo or Physarum, I’d guess:

Don’t worry — it’s harmless and just looks odd. Don’t bother to try to “fix it”… it’ll disappear on its own.
