Review Of The Sirrus Range Of Hybrid Bikes From Specialized

Specialized seem to find improvements for their Sirrus range every year. Introduced back in the 1980s, they have set the standard for sporty hybrid bikes ever since, with a range of component specifications. The result was that there was a Sirrus to suit every budget.

Three models from the 2011 range form the focus of the review here – the Basic Sirrus, the Sport and the Elite.

All the bikes in the range have certain features in common.

• All are reasonably priced. Depending on components, you will pay between £350 and £550.
• All use the same lightweight A1 Premium Aluminum double butted alloy frame.
• All feature V-brakes with EZ Fire shifters, triple chainrings, double-wall rims with all-terrain tyres and flat pedals.

The main difference in specification within these three is the front fork – from a straight blade steel fork on the Sirrus, through aluminium on the Sirrus Sport to carbon/aluminium with elastomer inserts on the Sirrus Elite. Road vibration is cut down even more by the elastomer inserts on the Elite. So what you end up paying for is an increase in responsiveness and smoothness, and a decrease in weight, from 11.9 kg down to 10.6 kg.

You also get an increase in quality in the Shimano gear components across the Specialized Sirrus range. This may be noticeable by most people, maybe not. A nice feature of the Elite is the smarter stem and handlebar.

The great looks are a real selling feature of these bikes – some may even call this beauty. I would agree. The colourways are stunning, especially the satin black and grey on the Sirrus Sport. The frames are smooth-welded, with curved and tapered tubing so look particularly sleek, particularly as the cables are routed inside the frame.

These are both commuting and weekend fun bikes. There are plenty of gears to choose from – 21 or 24 – should be enough for anybody.

Which one would we choose to buy? Not an easy question to answer. At £350 the Sirrus is a great entry-level bike. However the aluminium and carbon forks on the higher models will probably be worth paying for. If money did not enter into the decision, you would probably go for the Elite. But it rarely is! But all the bikes in the range are superb value for money. We think that any one of the Specialized Sirrus range would be a delight to own.
