Trimming Grape Vines – The Secret To Grape Growing Success

Trimming grape vines is the single most important task of the backyard grape grower who desires to grow great grapes at home. Pruning the vines correctly will make the difference between a luscious, high quality harvest and having no ripe grapes at all. One of the biggest mistakes made by the novice grape farmer is not trimming grape vines enough to insure a successful growing season.

The reason most new grape growers don’t prune enough is because the grape vine itself is deceptive about letting you know what it needs to produce a great harvest. For example, if a annual droops in the hot sun, you know it needs water. So it is no surprise that novice grape growers are lulled into a false sense of security when they see their grape vine overladen with fruit as it begins its growing season. Since all seems to be going extremely well, they leave their vines alone, assuming they are flourishing and that they are doing too well to need to be pruned.

The problem here is that grapes grow on the new growth from one year old wood. All of that new growth will have buds on it. If it is all left to bear fruit, there will indeed be a huge crop the first year, but it will be more than your grapevine can support and the quality will suffer. Most of the fruit will not be usable, as the grape vine simply can’t process and provide nutrients to an unmanageable crop. With it’s energy stores depleted, the grape vine is also unable to prepare itself for winter, and the vine is weakened. Ultimately, this could lead to its demise.

This is why trimming grape vines is so important if you are serious about producing great tasting, succulent grapes. You’ll want to cut off about 90% of the vine each year during the dormant winter months to keep your grape vine healthy and thriving, producing great fruit year after year.
