All You Need To Know About The Weimaraner Breed
The origins of the Weimaraner breed goes back in the 19th century. The breed gets its name from the Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach, Karl August, whose court was in the city of Weimar which is in Germany. These dogs were originally raised as a hunting breed, being owned by royalty who used them to hunt large pray like boars, bears and deer. Along the time, when the hunt of large pray declined, Weimaraner dog was used to hunt smaller animals, like rabbits and foxes as well as fowls. Not only they hunt but they are also able of killing prays of any size.
The history of the weimaraner is not that clear. It is alleged that the standards for the breed were developed as early as the late 18th century, and some say that dogs with features that are very alike those of the Weimaraner can be traced back even further to the 13th century. Among connoisseurs there is the theory that the real ancestor of this breed would be the St. Hubert Hound which is nowadays known as the Bloodhound or Sleuth Hound. The whole intention behind developing the breed was to have a dog with noble looks and that was a reliable companion during hunts. Most people find these elegant and athletic dogs are attractive and pleasing to look at.
By tradition, the tails of these dogs are docked and this is considered a standard for the breed by the American Kennel Club. Although this is still fairly uncommon, this breed is beginning to appear with its whole tail still intact because, in many countries, tail docking is illegal now. One of their distinctive features of the Weimaraner dogs, also known as the Grey Ghosts, are their light amber, grey or blue-grey colored eyes. When it comes to being social with strangers this breed is not quite so much so as other hunting dogs are known to be.
Weimaraners are more protective of their owners and are known to be protective over their turf, making them rather territorial. They don’t act so friendly with strangers, but they also don’t tend to be aggressive, if properly socialized while they were still puppies. An angry weimaraner‘s hair will stand up on its back and its tail will stand erect so it is easy to tell when your Weimaraner is not too happy. This dog ranks among the top intelligent breeds and it is also very sensitive breed of dogs.
Due to the fact these dogs also possess an uncanny ability when it comes to problem solving, they have earned the reputation of having a human brain. These dogs work excellently and show intelligent obedience to their master’s orders, when they are present in contests or canine shows.
Sometimes people can find them stubborn, but these loyal dogs will never leave the side of their master. In fact, they are capable of bonding so closely with their owner that they are known as “Velcro Dogs” because they will remain near to their owner all the time if given half the chance. They are highly affectionate and loving toward their owners and need attention from them, even making it somewhat tricky trying to get them to sleep in their own beds!.
