Ribbon Winter

The White Ribbon-Dark and Compelling Mystery
The moment I was waiting for since the winter finally came last night. I went to the video store Tuesday determined to rent The White Ribbon. I assumed I would be one of the few video store customers who knew about this rare treasure and assumed I would have no problem renting it on the very date of its release. Blockbuster only received three copies of this award winning independent drama and they were all rented by 6:00 p.m. Evidently, I was not the only person who knew that this film would be a gem. I called the store yesterday and desperately asked if they had it in stock. I expected to be disappointed but instead was told that I called right after one copy was returned. They were nice enough to hold it for me (as I must be a premium customer by now) and I picked it up with eager anticipation!
This movie was absolutely incredible. I was caught, hook, line and sinker the second the opening credits made their debut. I knew The White Ribbon was going to be an effective film, if not for the content, at least for the fact that it was shot in black and white. The opening credits were shown on the black screen in white writing and were so miniscule; they were almost impossible to see. There was complete silence and a pause between each of the credits and it took some time for them to finish before the movie began. It gave me some time to clear my mind of the day’s thoughts and focus on what I was about to see. The approach to the way the credits were presented was very unique because it set the mood of the film, which was dark, eerie, absorbing and downright haunting.
Michael Haneke is the writer and director of The White Ribbon and a master at capturing an extremely real sense of evil. He delivers us a world of dysfunction, consumed with betrayal, abuse, sorrow and dread, yet in the midst is a blossoming love story. The White Ribbon is a symbol for innocence and also represents the prevention of domestic violence. The couple in the film who fall in love in the midst of a secret hell seem to represent the innocence of the human race and give us a sign of hope while everything around them is full of hate and people are being murdered by an unknown killer. Film students who want to learn about great writing, directing and cinematography should be required to watch this movie. The whole film is so consuming, you can almost smell the air in the setting. I will watch The White Ribbon again this weekend.
The White Ribbon won the Palme d’Or, the highest honor of the Cannes Film Festival. It took the prizes for Best Director, Best Screenwriter and Best Film at the European Film Awards in Germany, Best Foreign Language Film at the Golden Globes and more.
