How to Update Your Christmas Tree for 2010

Is your Christmas tree looking a bit drab? Like anything else, over time the tree decorations can look a bit tired. We grow attached to our cherished ornaments and we don’t want to go through the trouble and expense of starting from scratch. However, you can update your tree with very little money and keep all your treasured ornaments. Just use one or all of these simple tips and welcome your tree to 2010!

Paint

Interior designers will tell you that the quickest and most cost-effective way to transform a room is by painting its walls. The same rule may be applied to your tree. Artificial Christmas trees continue to improve and look more and more realistic with new technologies. If your artificial tree is lack-luster, you can paint it yourself to save the cost of buying a new tree. Any spray paint that works on plastics will suffice, and there are no rules as far as color. White trees are popular for a retro look and make bright ornaments pop. But this year there are no colors that aren’t trendy: red, purple, blue, silver, gold – any color you desire! If you prefer the traditional green, you could try flocking your tree with white paint. Or, you might have to break down and buy a new tree.

Ribbon

Never underestimate the power of a spool of wired ribbon. They go on sale at craft and fabric stores on a regular basis, and can be used for an endless list of decorations, including your Christmas tree. By using a lot of ribbon on your tree, you freshen its look and add cohesion to your collection of ornaments. You can use ribbon as:

• A tree topper in a large bow
• A garland wrapped around the tree
• Multiple bows scattered throughout the branches

Your ornaments seem to be rejuvenated when you add new ribbon next to them. The best part is, if you decide you want a different ribbon the next year, it’s an inexpensive switch!

Inexpensive Ornaments

Like ribbon, uniform sets of ornaments also make your tree more cohesive and put together. You can purchase glass ball ornaments in inexpensive packages and in all varieties of sizes, colors and patterns. A simple solid-colored collection may be all that your tree needs to bring it to life. It’s amazing how your old ornaments can be made new again with a shiny new ball ornament by their side. Alternatively, you may use icicle ornaments to achieve the same effect. Icicle ornaments look great when your lights reflect off their glassy surface. Plastic icicle ornaments in varying lengths come in large sets so you can scatter them all over your tree. It’s okay to have a diverse collection of ornaments, as long as you have something basic to pull it all together and make your eclectic collection look intentional.

Even if you chose to do all three of these updates, you would only leave a minor dent in your wallet. Paint is an easy weekend project, and it only takes a few seconds to tie a bow with ribbon. If you are completely craft illiterate, buying packages of simple ornaments will update your tree’s look. Transforming your Christmas tree does not have to be a long and expensive project. A few simple additions will welcome your tree to Christmas 2010.
