Blue and Green Wedding Flowers

Looking to add a fresh flavor to your wedding flowers? Try combining shades of blue and green blossoms. While not the easiest colors to find in fresh flowers, there are some lovely options for blossoms in these cool colors, and in combination the results will be nothing short of fabulous.

Without a doubt, the number one favorite blue wedding flower is the blue hydrangea. Full, vibrant, and classic, there is nothing more lovely for a summertime affair. A simple but gorgeous design for a bridal bouquet is to pair several stems of blue and several stems of green hydrangeas. Trim the stems, wrap with floral tape, and cover with a luxe wide white satin ribbon for a diy bridal bouquet that is elegant yet easy. For more texture, use smaller and larger varieties of the hydrangeas.

The same blue and green hydrangeas which make a lovely and simple bouquet can be made more formal with the addition of white roses. They look ever so pretty for bouquets, and also make marvelous centerpieces. Set a very full arrangement of hydrangeas and roses atop a footed urn shape vase for a breathtaking centerpiece. If you want to play up the femininity of the arrangement, set it on a tablecloth with a soft blue and green floral pattern in watercolor shades. The same colors will be beautiful throughout the wedding, such as in the bridesmaid dresses and jewelry, the stationery, and even the wedding cake.

As gorgeous as they are, hydrangeas are by no means the only choice for blue or green blossoms for your wedding. A wonderful accent flower is deep blue muscari, also known as grape hyacinth. They look very much like tiny clusters of blue grapes, and have a lovely drapey effect, perfect for dripping around the edge of a romantic bouquet or around a centerpiece. The better known standard size hyacinth are also a great flower for a bride seeking blue colored blossoms. They look very sweet planted in white and blue cachepots for spring garden weddings. The shape of hyacinth petals combines beautifully with hydrangeas for a mixed flower arrangement.

Brides who like sophisticated flowers will love what can be done with green orchids. Both ladyslipper and cymbidium varieties can be found in shades of green, some which even have spots or stripes. They are truly stunning all by themselves, or in combination with other types of blossoms. A compact nosegay with just a few green orchids will look fresh and feminine, or opt for pure drama with an abundant green orchid cascade bouquet with trailing greenery and ribbons.

There are some additional vibrant green options for bridal bouquets and centerpieces. Compact bright green Kermit mums (can you guess how they got the name?) are one of the most versatile and cheerful green flowers. They nestle very well amongst other flowers, and would be fantastic with a mixture of blue blossoms like hydrangeas, delphinium, and muscari. For a fun and summery style, small limes can be added to blue and green flowers; an easy idea with a big impact is to fill a clear glass vase with limes and set the blue and green flowers on top.

It should also be mentioned that carnations are available dyed in a lime green shade. While I don’t normally advocate dyed flowers, there is something about the lime carnations that can be very hip and modern, as long as they are arranged in a very round and full shape with no other floral varieties. It is an intriguingly modern and funky bouquet to pair with a contrasting color like cherry red bridesmaid dresses; just don’t dress your attendants in matching green bridesmaid jewelry and dresses with all-green bouquets, otherwise they will be the ones who bring to mind Kermit the frog!
