Rare and Exciting Chinese Miao games

Who are the Miao?

As an ethnic group in mountainous south and southwestern China, the Miao have a long history and fascinating culture. Their embroidery, silver jewelry, and batik art is second to none in the world. The Miao have some rare and interesting games which are different from those in any parts of the world.

Climbing a knife ladder

A Miao knife ladder is 12 meters high, with 72 knives as rungs. The Miao climbers will first cut a piece of cloth or their hair with the knives to prove how sharp they are.

The barefoot player then start to climb the ladder, while keeping their feet unhurt. Besides climbing, they will display their acrobatic feats like flips and somersault.

Walking on the flaming iron board

To start this game, an iron board has coals burned on it for over 1 hour and can reach temperatures over 800 degrees Celsius.

The unshod Miao player then treads onto the iron boards.  You can see smoke flying off of his/her feet, but miraculously their feet aren't hurt at all.

The iron boards are then put into the water, which immediately boils and a cloud of white steam rises up.

Horse fighting

Horse fights and horse races are all held on June 6 of the lunar calendar, to express the Miao wishes for a good harvest.

Lots of people, young and old, come to enjoy the thrilling horse fighting games. Girls will dress up with beautiful silver ornaments like silver bracelets, as this is also a holiday for them to have fun.

Two horses are taken into a big circus, and then the games starts. The two horses quickly start a war when they encounter. They combat with each other frantically. After a few fight rounds, one horse runs to escape, with the other going after it.

People around the circus are so excited that they halloo and yell for the horses. Finally the champ will have a red ribbon decorating his body.

Horse races

Horse races are held on steep mountain roads. While the game starts, the rider stands 5 or 6 meters away behind the horse.

Running to jump onto the back of the horse, the rider then at once goes for a gallop. Without a saddle on the horse, the rider has to let his legs cling to the horse's body, in order not to fall off.

It's absolutely an astonishing competition. The champion will not only be awarded a prize, but probably win the heart of the single women.
