Making the Perfect Birthday Card

Creating personalized birthday cards for friends and relatives allows you to give something more of yourself on their special day. Fun, and easy to do, they can be as intricate and fancy or as simple as you like. Allowing your imagination to run wild can give you a relaxing and entertaining few hours.

  Design your card. Think about what you want to make before you start cutting. Lay out the colors to see if they work. Decide where you want the stamped wording or pictures to go.

• 3 Tearing one edge can give the card a great effect.

  Cut your paper. Keeping in mind the size of the card you are making, cut the paper according to the design you are working on. Lay the cut paper onto the card before gluing. The papers can either abut each other or slightly overlap. Once you are happy with the layout, paint the glue evenly onto the back of the paper and attach to the card.

  On the card shown here, four different papers were used: a patterned, two solids (green and purple) and a striped. Note how the paper is layered to give the card a dimensional effect. A rubber-stamped “Hey!” was placed on the layered paper as an “opening.”

• 4 Combining colors, ink, and embellishments makes the card special.

  Decorate the card with the rubber stamp and ink. In this design, there are five different papers. The cream dotted, the light blue, a solid brown, a striped and a solid green. Note how the striped square is backed by a square of solid green that was cut 1/4 inch larger than the striped square. This gives the striped square a border.
  A rubber stamp, dipped on a brown ink pad, was used to place the “Happy Birthday” wording on the cream paper, while a flower stamp, again coated in the brown ink, was placed on the striped paper. In addition, a pre-cut flower was glued to the center of the brown stamp to lend a little extra depth.

• 5 Your imagination can run wild with embellishments.

  Decorate the card even more. Placing those added little extra touches can enhance a card and make it incredibly fancy. On the card featured here, only three kinds of paper were used: a pale green solid, a white solid and a striped. Two different rubber stamps were used with pale blue ink to give the white solid paper extra flair. The striped paper is the “wrapping” on the “gift,” and there is a ribbon embellishment. Both ends of the ribbon have been glued under the pale green “box” top and the striped “wrapping” to make it appear as if the box was tied with a bow. Additionally, a tag was made, again using the rubber stamps used before and one that reads “for you.” The paper was cut in the shape of a tag and attached.
