Why Is Black The Most Popular Colour for Gadgets?

This does seem like a strange question to ask, why are we in love with black gadgets, but it does make you wonder. Everyone should know by now that we are a nation of gadget crazy lovers. Whatever your best gadget is, whether it’s a iPod, phone or netbook. We all have a handful of gadgets that we never leave the house without.

However, when it’s time to get yourself a new gadget, why do we always pick the same colour, black.

This question came to me after I read an article about Nintendo releasing their black version of the Wii in November. Nintendo said that they expect a sales boost in their console when they launch the new black edition. However, why would they assume that they will get a sales boost simply because they release their console in a new colour. It’s not like their competitors are blowing them out of the water simply because they have black versions of their console. As a matter of fact, Nintendo have actually sold more Wii’s than their competitor consoles, and the Wii is white.

The question of popular gadget colour can spread to a number of different gadget markets. The mobile phone market is just one example. When the iPhone was released, the black backed version sold out well before the white backed. Really you can take any phone, just look at the available phones, you will see that the majority of them come in black.

Another market where this question can be asked is in the television market. A number of years ago, mainly before LCD TVs, you could pickup a TV in almost any colour, from black to pink. However, now it’s an almost impossible task to find a TV that isn’t black.

These days, pretty much all gadgets come in black, from binary watches to binary clocks. It’s hard to see the main reason why we always opt for black gadgets. Although the black colour hides dirt, it does show dust more. Plus, if your black gadgets were to get scratched, the damage would be more visible compared to a scratch on a white or silver item.

For those of you reading this who don’t like black gadgets, you’re in luck as, for the time being, you can still get some gadgets that don’t come in just black. Although the availability may change in the future, for the time being you can still pick up a freeloader without it being only available in black. As for the question of why is black a popular gadget colour, I’m stumped, anyone else have a better incite?
