Orange Zebra

The offspring of my red zebra are very bright orange, would that still make him a phony?

Well, if you had a white one that bred with a red one then the offspring could go either way, but if they are all red then it would imply the diagnosis was likely incorrect.

With the naturally occuring variety of this fish the males are powder blue, while in the aquarium they all tend to be orange-red. But you said it was transluscent white, which is different, though I’ve heard of males being closer to white then blue.

If the color were stress you should see it come and go. If he’s turned white fully and permanently, then it might just be attributed to being a poor strain of fish, or perhaps a hybrid or mistaken identity altogether, since these fish are commonly sold under the wrong names. (how many fish are in the tank and what kind, are you certain the offspring are from this one in particular?)

Regardless, the important thing is that the fish is healthy and not getting harassed by any tankmates.
