The Best Gift of My Sister

I was born in a big family and I had two sisters and a brother. We were taught to be independent and responsible for what we did since we were children. Staying with family was great because parents took care of everything and I had nothing to worry about. But I was longing to go outside to the competitive, magnificent and fabulous world. So I moved out when I was 18, many young people like me would leave their parents to lead an independent life at the age of 18.

Three months later, my sister Liz showed up in front of my door, down and out. I was very sad and surprised to find her like this. I was certain that something terrible happened to her and I blamed that she didn’t call me at first. She thought that she could get through the hard times so she didn’t come to me when she had problems. And maybe she felt embarrassed to turn to the little sister for help.

She lost all of her savings in the stock market and was evicted by her landlord. I made her supper and we had this sister-sister talking over a couple of coffee. I asked her to stay with me before she found a job and she said yes. Her voice was so low that for a moment it skipped my recognition. I helped her unpack; frankly speaking, there was nothing to be unpacked.

She was my role model who graduated from a famous university with honors. I never missed an episode of Sex and the City in my spare time. Sarah Jessica Porker is holy cup of fashion, so inspired and glamour, and she is a shoes-lover, so is my sister. Girls need good shoes to make their lives easier.

I might not be able to afford a pair of Manolos, but I knew what I could do to show my support. That night I came back exhausted and went straight to bed only to find a box lying on my bed. It was a pair of shoes, the UGG boots I planed to surprise her with. My tiredness varnished instantly. I rushed to her door with the box on my hand. There she was, sitting on the bed confusingly with the same box.

“I saw you the other day, in the shop. You were inquiring about a pair of shoes. But you didn’t take it. I figured you’ve been tightening up your belts since I moved in, so after you left, I went to the shop and…”

“I was there because I wanted to buy them for you. I was late for an appointment so I told the assistant that I would come back and fetch them later. That’s what you saw.”
