What Kind Of Pillow Form To Use?

If you are making a new pillow for your couch or bed there are several things which you should consider when selecting the right pillow insert. The range of options to consider include: Shape, Size, Usage, Filling, Expected Care & Maintenance and a few others. This article will explain why each has its own importance to influence your pillow form shopping choices.

Pillow Shape

Although this may seem obvious it can actually depend on how the pillow will be used. Sometimes you are replacing an existing pillow on a couch and other times you’re making one from scratch. Common shapes are pillow squares in the 18 inch to 22 inch size range. Other specialty shapes include rectangles, neck rolls, bolsters, circles, spheres, triangles and other creative styles. Anything except squares can be difficult to find covers for unless you’re making your own. n rare size not normally picked but that makes for a great backrest is a euro pillow which is a square pillow form that measures 26 inches by 26 inches.

Pillow Size

Pillow Insert forms come in several sizes per shape. Most of the time you will want the pillow form to be plus or minus one inch of the cover it will be paired with based on filling, density and fabric. For example a light silk fabric should not have a pillow that is too wimpy to fill its internal space. Otherwise the fabric will bunch up and wrinkle easily on the outside. On the other hand a thick fabric cover like twill is more forgiving and you may in fact want the pillow to not be so tight and give it more of a shabby chic look. Generally speaking for a 5/95 filling you will want the outside cover to be equal to or slightly smaller than the pillow form by about an inch at the most (so use a 19 inch pillow form for a 20 inch outer decorative pillow cover). If you are using down or a down alternative like PrimaLoft then you can have the pillow form be 1 inch bigger than the cover (so use a 21 inch Primaloft pillow form for a 20 inch cover you may have bought or purchased).

Pillow Usage

Generally pillows that come with a sofa couch are square in shape (usually 20 inch squares) and can be given the famous karate chop look. If you are decorating a bed you may want to use bolsters or neck rolls to give it a hotel look (and of course a Euro pillow is a natural on a bed). The best rule of thumb is that if you plan to rest or sleep against a decorative pillow then you should use soft fillings like down or down alternatives like PrimaLoft. If you are stuffing a pillow cover and just giving it the karate chop look then a 5/95 blend is perfectly fine.

Pillow Filling

When it comes to decorative pillow insert forms the fillings are usually Down & Feather Blends, Down Alternatives or Polyesters. Down & Feather fillings are the ultimate in luxury and are a great choice due to the way the fillings allow the famous karate chop look. Down alternatives are usually special microfiber polyesters that are loose blown versus being batted. Finally polyester fillings are the cheapest and can be found at hobby or craft stores. These fillings don’t allow karate chop looks and feel stiff and not comfortable. When it comes to down and feather blends we generally think softer is better – so fillings like 25/75′s or 10/90′s have higher down content and thus will be softer (10/90 blend is 10% down and 90% feathers).

Expected Care & Maintenance

Most pillow insert forms that contain down or down alternative can be home machine washed if the pillow size is 26 inches by 26 inches or less. Anything bigger and it won’t wash and dry properly. Because decorative pillows are covered with a decorative fabric they seldom need to be washed and dried. However if accidents do happen we find that the down alternatives – specifically PrimaLoft are easy to wash and dry due to the fact that they do not absorb water.
