The Growing Importance Of Australian Football

The way things have gone this month, anyone looking to Fly Drive Australia would want to do so in a boat. But elsewhere in the Australian news, things have been rather more sunny for their Football team (that’s Soccer Football rather than ‘Rules’ Football). The rise of Football in Australia has been something of a slow burn, but the last half decade has seen them become something of a world power, ranked 14th in FIFA’s list. However, after crashing out of the World Cup in the group stage, it was worried that Australia’s new found mediocrity might take hold.

But things may just be looking up for the Pacific Ocean side, with great result in the 2011 AFC Asian Cup. After years of being virtually unchallenged in the utterly uncompetitive Oceania Football Confederation’s Cup, Australia became an AFC member. This offers them greater assurance of a World Cup place, despite the presence of other emerging World powers like Japan and South Korea. In fact, Japan are their main opponents in the 2011 AFC Asian Cup final. Both sides will be keen to win the tournament: Australia want to prove themselves, Japan want to grab a record fourth title. This has therefore been one of the more reassuringly successful Australia tours.

Also of significance at this tournament have been the hosts, Qatar, who were controversially selected as the hosts of the 2022 World Cup. The home team have actually distinguished themselves at the event, though all attention was on the (absolutely fine) stadiums. It was the Japanese who put a stop to the Qatari campaign, but with a last minute goal in a game that was looking like a 2-2 draw at full time. The Australian effort in the final has a lot to do with future hosting duties. Australia will host the 2015 Asian Cup and the opportunity to defend the title on home soil would create a far more interesting event for those on Australia holidays. Australia have the chance to not only make it big, but to stay in that position for years to come. It’s all dependent on momentum: in the higher profile AFC, and with a better chance at the World Cup, they’re going to stop losing high-profile players to other national sides, as they’ve been prone to doing in the past.
