Using Creative Visualisations to Hone Your Tarot Skills

Getting to know your particular deck of tarot cards is important if you want your readings to flow.  One exercise you can do to help immerse yourself into your cards is to practice creative visualisations.  This simply means spending some time quietly with a particular card and placing yourself into the image and then writing down your story of the card.

To begin, choose a card which you feel drawn to and which you want to know better – this can be either a card from the Major or Minor Arcana, or a Court Card, the choice is yours.  Make sure you won’t be disturbed and if you have a special place where you do your tarot work, prepare it as you would normally. Perhaps you might like to use candles or incense, or place a particular crystal on your reading cloth. You’ll need your tarot journal too.

Hold your chosen card and really look at the image. Notice what’s happening in the card, if there’s a person or an animal, the colours, whether the card is bright or dark. You may already know a little or a lot about this card; you may instantly recall your meaning for it and how it usually fits into your readings.

Place the card face up beside you and open your tarot journal. Using the card as a reference point, begin to tell the tale of the card as you see it. Try to bring it to life, have the people or animals behave and speak as if they were real.

The following is a creative visualisation I did a few years’ back, using The Magician card from the Radiant Rider-Waite tarot deck.

“It’s a hot summer’s afternoon and a small crowd of villagers have gathered in the meadow beside the river. The sun’s beating down from a cloudless blue sky and excitement is running high. Any break from the normal day to day life is welcome, but no more so than when a stranger arrives in our midst ….

Voices subside as he steps out from behind the fronds of a weeping willow. It’s as if he appears from nowhere and a gasp vibrates through the crowd. He’s a striking sight in his red and white robes, his drk hair gleaming in the sunlight.

A sturdy wooden table has been carried into the meadow and from beneath this, the stranger lifts four objects and places them carefully and respectfully onto the table.

A gold cup gleams brightly as does a silver sword; a long wooden wand lies beside a round, golden pentacle. The stranger slowly raises his arm towards the tumbling flowers round his head and silence falls ….. then, he begins to speak in a deep, resonating voice and we stand, mesmerised as we listen. My heart beats faster …

The sun slowly moves through the sky as the afternoon lengthens and still we listen, a captive audience. The stranger speaks of magical, mysterious things, of places we can only dream of, sights and sounds we can only guess at, his voice hypnotic and soothing. Even the children sit silently during the long afternoon.

From his raised arm flies a flash of bright white light that shoots through his body, down to the tips of his other outstretched hand. A gasp ripples through the crowd and several people back away in fear.

Then, as swiftly as he came, the stranger has gathered together his belongings from the table and slipped softly away into the dusk … the excitement is over, the crowd gradually drifts away. My heart sinks as I watch him go; I feel as if I have lost a part of myself, but his words linger in the air, reminding me to live my life in a more focused way, to use the knowledge and resources I have to create change in my world and to be aware of the power within me ….”

By doing exercises such as this, your knowledge of the cards will increase; you’ll see things you previously missed or you may have a “light-bulb” moment as a different meaning becomes clear to you.  You can make the visualisations as simple or elaborate as you want; instead of writing them down, you could record them instead.  However you choose to work will be the right way for you and you’ll find a new understanding from your tarot deck.
