After years of hanging pictures, I’ve formulated a few rules. If a wall appears empty without a picture then this is when you should hang one up and never should you hang pictures on every wall you see unless you’ve always yearned to live in an art gallery. Other than this a second rule applies. When there is furniture underneath do not make the groupings wider than this. Should you hang pictures that vary in sizes then you should hang them closer together to get a unified look. For example, you may have a prized collection of bird prints but the frames differ in type and size. Frame by frame hanging of pictures should be avoided and instead go for pleasing geometrics.
Then there is the third rule. Be aware that the wall is a second frame, one that serves to set off a group of pictures on all four sides, even when hung in close proximity. Should you consider pleasing geometry you should arrange the pictures to look like a square or a rectangle afterwards. You may have four pictures all framed alike and of the same size what you should do is hang them in a straight line over a long table, geometrically in a square over the sofa, or vertically above a small step table. Using the step pattern to hang pictures is ideal for staircases. Still the best option would be to consider right angles and go for straight lines. There is always room for a little regimentation every now and then.
You may be one of those who have been able to accumulate a collection of pictures over a lifetime including old family portraits, originals, prints, and reproductions. You should consider framing and matting everything alike to unify them when you plan on hanging them together. For 16 prints, one friend used forest green matting and simple gold frames. Setting them against a red wall resulted in a sensational look. When it came to adding color a friend matted each picture over her sofa a unique shade.
