Red Dot Sights As Alternatives To BUIS

Flip up back up iron sights are almost universal on ARs these days, but they do have some limitations. Firstly, they’re not there when you need them – it takes a few seconds to flip them up. This can be the difference between winning and losing in competition or life and death in a hostage situation or combat. Secondly, those iron sights instantly drop you back into the early years of the 20th century in terms of the capabilities they offer. Having a secondary red dot sight instantly available is a far better alternative. It can be used to engage late unmasking targets, a critical requirement in urban environments.

One of the most popular options as a secondary red dot is the immensely strong Aimpoint Micro T-1. Machined or extruded components are manufactured from 6000 series aluminium, the Micro is 2.4″ long by 1.6″ high and weighs just 3.7 ounces with its standard Weaver/Picatinny mount and only three ounces without it. This sight is parallax free and rated to depths of up to 80ft. It runs on a single 3 volt battery that gives 50,000 hours continuous operation at a setting of 7. The sight offers 6 night vision compatible and 7 day settings. The aiming point is a single 4 MoA dot which the makers claim has been proven to be the fastest and most accurate aiming pattern ever devised. Adjustment is via one half inch and one hundred yard clicks and an adjuster tool is included in the lens cap. The sight is MIL SPEC anodized black. The US Army is currently evaluating the T-1 in Afghanistan in some quantities as a potential replacement for the capable but much heavier CompM4s and the sight has already become standard with some other countries special forces such as the Netherlands Marines. An amazing variety of mounts are available for this sight including both vertical and canted offset mounts from La Rue Tactical.

Not everyone wears night vision goggles or habitually SCUBA dives with their gun, therefore the manufacturer has come out with the 15 ft rated Aimpoint Micro H-1 model which has 12 day settings, including one extra bright one. The H-1 is the same as the T-1 in all other respects and is the right choice for sports shooting, hunting and pest control applications. This tiny sight does not look in the least out of place on a waterfowl shotgun and has won itself a keen following in the Nordic countries for this purpose and for running boar and moose shooting in the cold and dark conditions that prevail there in winter.

For those with higher power optics, the US Army recently followed the US Navy’s lead and type classified the L3  Insight Mini Red Dot Sightor MRDS. This 3.5 MoA red dot sight is 1.9″ long, 1.1″ wide and 1.5″ tall and weighs an amazing 0.85 ounces thanks to its advanced polymer construction. It uses a single CR-1632 lithium battery and comes with a windage/elevation adjustment tool, mounting screws and lens cleaning pen. Adjustments are 1 MoA clicks and the sight has four manually set brightness levels that are overidden if the sight is left to automatically select brightness to suit ambient light levels. The Micro Red Dot Sight will initially be issued to snipers and designated marksmen but could well end up on the M150 ACOG. The Micro Red Dot Sight fits Docter red dot sight mounts and is a perfect replacement for that unit.
