Basic Tips For Decorating Your Unisex Nursery

In a time when people have access to limitless information at the push of a button or the click of a mouse, sometimes it’s nice to have a little mystery in our lives. One of the most exciting mysteries you can have is the sex of your baby. Some people want to know whether they are having a boy or a girl as soon as possible, but if you have decided to wait to find out until the day the bundle of joy arrives, there are some things to take into consideration. You have to think about both male and female baby names, buy teeny, tiny unisex-themed clothes, and decorate your nursery so it would be a lovely place for either a boy or a girl. Even if you do know the sex of your baby, you might want to avoid the clichés of pink princesses and blue trucks when you’re decorating the room in which your baby will grow up.

Here are a couple pointers that will help you put together a fun, lively room for a baby of either sex. The tips also mean that your baby won’t grow out of the décor at the rate that he or she grows out of baby clothes, and as an adult, you will enjoy the room, too.

First, avoid the predictable pastel colors. Baby blues and pinks are very gender specific and pastels in general are best suited for newborns and Easter. This color palette won’t last long before you have to go in and repaint everything. Instead, use a natural palette accented with bright, vibrant colors. Neutral whites and creams are great as backgrounds, while primary colors (yellow, red, and blue) help add life to the room without making it feel too grown-up. Play with a color palette that attracts your eye and is interesting.

Once you’ve decided on your color scheme, use wall hangings and poster art instead of wallpaper. Hanging framed original paintings, drawings, or fine art prints gives you more options in your decorating scheme, and you can easily switch out one or a few pieces whenever you want. You can also give the room a whole new feel by moving pieces around or bringing in new art. Some ideas that are popular with children of all ages are classic cartoons and animal themes. A few framed sericels featuring Bugs Bunny and his friends or Disney film stills will work easily in a unisex room. Chuck Jones and Warner Bros. sericels are ideal for any kid and bring a playful feel to the room. Oceans and marine life paintings and fine art prints are also a great way to breathe life into a room. Finally, “tie the room together” with a rug of a complimentary color. If you’re going for a bright animation theme, a deep orange or a rich purple rug will compliment the colors on your walls without showing dirt too easily.
