Sewing by hand, or with a needle and thread is the normal strategy utilize to piece together quilt blocks. Even if you are the owner of a sewing machine you should practice these stitches. Place the two quilt pieces you’re connecting together, with right sides facing one another. Pin them using 3 pins. Position one pin in every one of the top 2 corners, and the 3rd pin in the middle of the piece. Begin at one corner and poke the needle thru both fabric layers then bring it up thru the fabric about 1/8th of an in. down the seam line. Take one backstitch to keep your end fixed firmly, and then continue this in and out stitching. It is a running stitch, also called a piecing stitch. Of course it takes a few practice session to obtain a straight line. You will draw a line in pencil on the wrong side of the fabric if that helps. After you have reached the other, corner take a backstitch in reverse and complete a 90-degree rotation into the seam allowance. Create two stitches and cut the thread. A whole bunch of quilters don’t knot the ends of their thread, as they feel knots rub could wear out the fabric quicker

An additional stitch that newbies must learn is the applique stitch. In appliques blocks, a fabric motif is cut out, layered and stitched on the background of an added fabric. This technique of sewing the layers together should be almost invisible to the eye.

The applique stitch up should leave a small apparent dot of a stitch. To begin, commence with a quilting needle and knotted quilting thread in a color that blends with the applique design. Prepare the design by basting the raw edges underneath. Pressing with the end of an iron first will help. Next baste the fabric motif onto the background fabric in the desired position.

Now it’s ultimately time to applique. Start by placing the needle underneath the background fabric. Push the needle up through the background fabric and the edge of the applique motif. Pull the thread through both layers. Now place the needle right next to where the thread comes up, but only on the background fabric. Make an1/8th in. stitch thru the background fabric and bring it up at the fringe of the applique motif. Keep on this stitch all around the fabric motif, ending beneath the background fabric on the incorrect side. Knot and trim.

Hand sewing seems like a particularly lengthy process. After you build on a cadence, it proceeds much quicker. Hand sewn quilts are often valued over machine-stitched creations.
