Appliques Sewing

Fusible Web Applique Technique
Applique quilts date back hundreds of years or more depending on the region of the world. The earliest quilters were only the very wealthy. The industrial revolution brought about great change in textile manufacturing, bringing fabric to the masses. Add the invention of the sewing machine and you can witness the birth of traditional quilting. Many early quilts can be seen in museums and carry wonderful stories as well as historical significance. Today’s quilts will offer the same rich history and cultural importance to our children’s children. Applique quilting continues to be a beautiful way to express your creativity. It offers great flexibility and lends it self to quilters of all skill range. Advances in quilting notions and adhesives make many modern quilting techniques possible.
Fusible web applique technique allows the quilter to transfer the applique design either from a commercial previously printed paper pattern or directly from their imagination to the paper side of paper backed fusible web. Each design is loosely cut out and with a hot dry iron is fused to the wrong side of your applique fabric. Then cutting along the pattern lines you produce your applique. Peeling the paper away from the adhesive webbing can be tricky for small pieces and preventing the webbing from separating too soon from larger pieces can also be a challenge. Now the complexity of applique designs vary but generally speaking you press your appliques to a foundation block of cotton fabric, placing each applique as directed by your pattern. Secure your raw edge with machine or hand stitches. Assemble all blocks together to create your quilt top or alternatively using your single foundation block, sandwich block top, inner batting and backing fabric together. Quilt by machine or by hand, bind quilted edges, add hanger sleeve and detailed label to your project and most of all, enjoy your beautiful applique quilt creation.
